IPL 2025: Hardik Pandya registers an unwanted record as Gujarat Titans edge past Mumbai Indians in a thriller

In one of the most dramatic fixtures of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Mumbai Indians (MI) hosted Gujarat Titans (GT) in game 56 of the tournament at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on May 6. Despite rain interruptions and a spirited bowling effort, Mumbai fell short as Gujarat pulled off a thrilling three-wicket win in a DLS-affected encounter. However, the game will be remembered not just for the result but for a rare and unwanted feat by MI skipper Hardik Pandya.

Hardik Pandya: A record for the wrong reasons

During Gujarat’s revised chase of 147 runs (after a rain adjustment from the original 156), MI skipper Hardik brought himself on to bowl the eighth over. It turned out to be one of the most expensive and erratic overs in IPL history. He started decently with three legal deliveries, but things spiraled from there he bowled three wides and two no-balls, allowing Shubman Gill to capitalize with a powerful six off the fourth legal ball (eighth overall). In total, 18 runs were conceded in the over, and its extended length of 11 balls made it one of the most forgettable spells in his career. After this disastrous over, Pandya was not brought back into the attack again. Reflecting on the incident after the game, Pandya described the no-balls as a ‘crime,’ that hurt the team at a crucial juncture. This over not only cost MI the momentum but also placed Hardik in an unenviable list of bowlers with the joint-most deliveries bowled in a single over in the IPL.

With this performance, Hardik joined an elite but unfortunate club of bowlers who have delivered 11-ball overs in the IPL:

Each of these bowlers struggled with extras like no-balls and wides, a cardinal sin in the T20 format, where every delivery and run can alter the outcome.

Mumbai Indians’ batting struggles and Gujarat Titans’ gritty chase

The match began with Gujarat winning the toss and opting to bowl first. MI openers Rohit Sharma (7) and Ryan Rickelton (2) failed to provide a solid start. However, Will Jacks (53) and Suryakumar Yadav (35) stitched a stabilizing partnership to lift the innings. Despite their efforts, a late-order collapse ensued, with the exception of Corbin Bosch, who chipped in with a crucial cameo, helping MI post 155 runs in 20 overs.

The Gujarat chase, revised to 147 in 17 overs due to rain, saw early stutters, but it was Gill’s composed knock, coupled with contributions from the middle order, that kept them in the hunt. However, the real momentum shift came in Hardik’s over, which allowed GT to get ahead on DLS when rain briefly threatened to halt play again. Eventually, Gujarat crossed the finish line in a tense finish, winning by three wickets and snapping Mumbai’s winning streak at home.
