Jaime Munguia boxed his way to a decision win over Bruno Surace in their rematch, avenging the shocking upset loss from last December tonight in Riyadh.
Munguia won on scores of 116-112, 117-111, and 117-111 to improve to 45-2 (35 KO), getting his career back on track with a solid performance that saw him boxing to win rounds instead of trying to overwhelm his opponent.
Surace (26-1-2, 5 KO) was never able to land the big punch he did last December, and as the fight wore on, you could see the difference in high-level experience between the two, as Munguia was able to make adjustments, while Surace seemed to get stuck on trying to land a single big shot to change the momentum. That shot never came.
You could see some clear Canelo Alvarez influence in Munguia’s approach tonight, logical as he’s now training under Eddy Reynoso.
“I think it was a great fight, we had a really good opponent in front of us,” Munguia said. “It was really important for me to come back from (the loss to Surace). I got the victory, and I’m here to stay. (Reynoso) was a great change that I made. We’re going to continue to grow and gel as a team, working together to do even better things.”
“I think more than anything it was just about this fight, being calm and understanding the distance. Surace was looking for me to make a mistake, and I’m really happy and grateful to Eddy Reynoso.”
Asked who he wanted next, Munguia mentioned Edgar Berlanga and Caleb Plant as possible targets.
