Birmingham City boss Chris Davies told his players to reflect on the magnitude of their achievement after they shattered the Football League’s single-season points record.

Goals from Ethan Laird and Alfie May guided Birmingham to a 2-0 victory over their former boss Steve Bruce and Blackpool on Wednesday, taking them to 108 points in League One this term.

That means they have surpassed Reading’s haul of 106 points when winning the Championship in 2005-06, to take the all-time record across England’s top four tiers.

And with another game to come, against Cambridge United on Saturday, Davies’ Blues could yet end a historic campaign with 111 points.

Only 16 teams have ever reached 100 or more points in an English league campaign, with Wolves setting the previous record for a League One season in 2013-14 (103).

Birmingham – who are minority owned by NFL legend Tom Brady – will return to the Championship after a year’s absence next season, but Davies wants his players to devote some time to celebrating their achievement.

“I have spoken to the players about the legacy we could leave this season and the mark we could make in the footballing world,” Davies said after Wednesday’s win.

“I have been drumming it into them, to chase a record like this… it isn’t a club record, not something that people will brush over. Everyone will know in the next 24 hours what we have done.

“To achieve 108 points is truly special and a remarkable achievement. I said to the players, ‘make sure you sit back, think about it, reflect and understand what it takes to do that’.

“Think how many football teams there have been, how many seasons there have been. We are the team that have got the most points in the history of English football.”
