James Rodríguez‘s participation in the Club World Cup is up in the air after FIFA’s decision to exclude Club León for violating rules against multi-ownership. Amid this uncertainty, another club qualified for the competition has emerged with the intention of acquiring the Colombian star.

FIFA confirmed the exclusion of León from the upcoming Club World Cup. The club shares the same owners as Pachuca, another participant in the tournament. FIFA regulations prohibit two clubs with the same ownership from participating in the competition.

León is awaiting a favorable ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) regarding their appeal. This tense situation has fueled speculation about the future of James Rodríguez, who joined ‘La Fiera’ with the promise of playing in the Club World Cup.

Amid this situation, Pachuca, a club with the same owner as León but eligible to participate in the Club World Cup, has emerged with the intention of signing the Colombian national team captain for the competition, according to Mexican media outlet TUDN.

James Rodríguez to Pachuca for the Club World Cup?

“Given the possibility that Club León will not participate in the 2025 Club World Cup, pending the TAS resolution in early May, the Tuzos are considering reinforcing their squad with Colombian forward James Rodríguez,” TUDN reported.

“James arrived in Liga MX with León with the promise of participating in the great summer tournament at the club level; however, a violation of the regulations is about to leave Los Esmeraldas out of the competition, even after ratification by FIFA. If so, the Pachuca board is contemplating integrating the Colombian into their ranks, as it should be remembered that each team can add six foreign players in this Club World Cup,” they added.

A promise unfulfilled?

Rodríguez’s move to León was largely motivated by the opportunity to compete in the revamped Club World Cup, a prestigious tournament featuring the best clubs from around the globe. However, FIFA’s decision has thrown those plans into disarray, leaving the Colombian star’s future uncertain.

Pachuca, also owned by Grupo Pachuca, offers Rodríguez a potential lifeline to still participate in the tournament. The move would allow him to fulfill his ambition of playing on the world stage, while also providing Pachuca with a significant boost to their squad.

Complications and considerations

However, the potential transfer is not without its complications. Rodríguez would need to agree to a move to Pachuca, and the two clubs would need to negotiate a deal. Furthermore, Pachuca already has a number of foreign players on their roster, and would need to make room for Rodríguez within the squad.

Despite these challenges, the possibility of seeing James Rodríguez in a Pachuca jersey at the Club World Cup is a tantalizing prospect for fans and a potential solution to a difficult situation for the Colombian star. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether this move becomes a reality.
