2-1 win vs. West Ham: What does Liverpool need next week to claim the Premier League title?

Liverpool took another major step toward the 2024-25 Premier League title with a thrilling 2-1 victory over West Ham United, further widening the gap between themselves and closest challengers Arsenal. With the finish line in sight, what exactly do the Reds need next week to officially secure the crown?

On Sunday, Liverpool hosted West Ham at Anfield and opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Mohamed Salah delivered a pinpoint pass for Luis Diaz to finish with a tap-in. However, the Reds struggled to maintain attacking momentum for much of the match.

The game took a dramatic turn in the 86th minute when a miscommunication between Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson resulted in an own goal by the Scottish defender. But just three minutes later, van Dijk atoned for the mistake with a towering header to restore Liverpool’s lead and seal the three points.

How Liverpool can clinch the Premier League title next week?

With the win, Liverpool remain atop the Premier League table with 76 points from 32 games. Arsenal, currently in second, sit on 63 points. With 18 points still up for grabs, the Reds can mathematically clinch the title as early as next week—if certain results fall their way.

The scenario is the following: if Arsenal lose their next league match and Liverpool win theirs, the title race would be over. That combination would hand Liverpool an unassailable lead and crown them Premier League champions for the second time in the club’s history.

On Matchday 33, Arsenal travel to face Ipswich Town on Sunday. The Gunners are heavy favorites, but Ipswich—who have managed just four wins all season—are fighting to avoid relegation and could be motivated to pull off an upset.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will visit the King Power Stadium to take on Leicester City, another relegation-threatened side. In their previous meeting at Anfield earlier this season, Liverpool came away with a 3-1 victory.

Arsenal’s midweek schedule could also play a role. Mikel Arteta’s squad will face Real Madrid in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal tie, which could impact their league performance depending on the physical and emotional toll.

With just six points needed to mathematically secure the title, Liverpool have a clear path to Premier League glory. Whether the celebration begins next week or not, the Reds are closing in on another historic campaign under new head coach Arne Slot.
