A scrum is trying to one of two things: be clean to launch an attack/exit or be aggressive and win a penalty. If we plot cleanliness against aggression, we see that it is mostly a trade off between the two – teams are either one or the other
the above graph is colour coded by country, which tells us some interesting things
4/5 NZ team are more clean than aggressive 3/4 Irish teams below average for cleanliness 3/4 Welsh teams below average for aggression 8/11 Super Rugby teams below average for aggression
