Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund has admitted that his goal drought, which ended just before the March international break, affected him.

Hojlund ended his 21-game goal drought as United beat Premier League strugglers Leicester City 3-0 at the King Power Stadium on 16th March.

He had not scored since December 12 but took advantage of some pitiful defending from the Foxes to claim the 28th-minute opener.

Hojlund followed that up with a winning goal for Denmark against Portugal in a Nations League quarter-final first-leg victory at Parken Stadium.

The 22-year-old has endured an extremely difficult season that has seen him manage just three goals in 26 Premier League appearances. He has notched eight goals and four assists in 41 games across all competitions.

The Dane’s poor form has led to speculation that United could look to offload him this summer, amidst rumoured interest in his services from Italy.

Ahead of the Red Devils’ Europa League meeting with Lyon later tonight, Hojlund spoke to Denmark’s version of Disney+ [via SportWitness] and opened up on his barren run without a goal.

He explained, “It was a vicious circle. We didn’t play that well as a team, and it also affected me. But I’m not the type to lie down and give up.”

“That’s also why I played and started in those games. It’s because I’ve continued to work for the team and on my own game.”

“I don’t just sit down and say: ‘It’s great that I haven’t scored in 21 games’. I sit myself down and look at my game to see what I can do better.”

He added, “I also stand somewhere and think: ‘Why the hell is it that I can’t score?’ Where is it that it’s going wrong?”

Lyon vs. United kicks off at 20:00 BST.
