We found out yesterday that star tackle Terron Armstead had decided to retire from playing after 12 seasons in the NFL. This is a significant loss for our Miami Dolphins, as he was one of the very best at his position when he was healthy enough to be on the field, given his seemingly constant stream of injuries. Most of us have probably sadly seen this as an inevitable outcome sooner rather than later.

So what now for T-Stead? In addition to his excellent play, he is also known as a great locker-room guy and team leader. Additionally, as with most offensivelinemen, he’s also exceptionally intelligent. It is unfortunate to lose a guy on the field who exemplified precisely what you want in a player with his behavior, but does it have to be the end? Like most professional leagues, the NFL has a history of keeping some of their more prominent names around with the team after their playing days have ended.

Like Many other teams in the NFL, Miami has brought back former players in various roles, including Nat Moore and Dan Marino. I have often thought that when certain players who gave you something beyond their excellent play on the field retire, the team should consider giving a guy who has meant so much to the team in the past a continuing future with the team. Despite T-Stead having such a short stint with the Dolphins, it’s hard not to think of him as possibly one of those guys.

So tonight’s question is: Given his proven leadership, would you like to see the Dolphins extend Armstead the offer of a position with the organization that can continue to pay benefits for the team? Besides Terron, are there other former players that you would like to see the team bring back in a different role? What about other guys who are currently playing? Do you see a possible future role for them with the team when their playing days are over?
