Mohamed Salah has been a central figure in the 2024-25 season, not only due to his impressive statistics, which have placed him in the Ballon d’Or conversation, but also because of the ongoing uncertainty surrounding his contract. As his current deal nears its end and with Saudi Pro League (SPL) interest in tow, Salah’s future at Liverpool has reportedly taken a major turn.

Throughout the season, Liverpool has had to address the contracts of several key players, including Salah, who has proven his worth with one of the best seasons of his career. After consistently delivering goals and assists, both the club and the Egyptian star appear to have found common ground.

According to Sky Sports‘ Sacha Tavolieri, Salah has reached a preliminary agreement with Liverpool to extend his contract. With his current deal set to expire in June 2025, the new agreement will reportedly extend his tenure at Merseyside until June 2027.

Liverpool’s policy in recent years has been to avoid offering lucrative contracts to players over the age of 30. However, despite this, both parties are reportedly committed to keeping Salah at the club, signaling a shift in their approach due to his exceptional form.

This news comes amid interest from the Saudi Pro League, which has been trying to bring Salah to the Middle East, in part to boost their Egyptian fanbase. However, Salah’s apparent desire to stay in England has led him to reportedly reject lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia, which would have paid him up to ten times his current salary.

With 32 goals and 22 assists in 45 games this season, Salah is on track to break personal records. Despite Liverpool’s exit from the Champions League and FA Cup, his contract renewal represents a positive sign for the club and their supporters heading into the future.

Van Dijk could follow Salah’s lead

Another Liverpool star in a similar contract situation is defender Virgil van Dijk. After Liverpool’s Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain, Van Dijk admitted he had “no idea” where he would be playing next season. However, following Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Fulham on Sunday, the Dutchman expressed optimism about his future:

“There is progress, yeah,” Van Dijk said when asked about contract extension talks. “I don’t know, we’ll see. Listen, these are internal discussions and we’ll see. I love the club, I love the fans and they were there for us again and we wanted to reward them,” he said ahead of the West Ham United game, leaving the door open for another potential renewal at Liverpool.
