Ever since the Kansas City Chiefs selected running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire with the last pick of 2020’s first round, the wisdom of taking any running back in the opening round has been a hot topic among Kansas City fans.
Some believe that in the modern game, a running back can never provide enough value to justify the investment of a first-round pick. Others believe that quality running backs can be found in later rounds, so there’s no point in spending a first-rounder.
It’s true that sometimes, the first round ends without a running back being taken. But as recently as 2023, three running backs were selected on Day 1 — and that might happen again during the 2025 draft.
