Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald hoping for more joint scrimmages

One of the changes to the Seattle Seahawks’ training camp routine under head coach Mike Macdonald was the introduction of joint practices, which have often served as a substitute for playing starters and other key players in the preseason. Last year marked Seattle’s first joint scrimmage since 1991, when the Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons had a scrimmage in Portland, Oregon.

At the annual league meeting in Florida, Macdonald indicated that he’d like to do more joint practices in 2025, only this time one team would come to the Pacific Northwest to participate.

Mike Macdonald wants to do joint practices again this summer, ideally both at home and on the road. The Seahawks practiced against the Titans in Nashville before their preseason game last year. Macdonald clearly sees value in live reps in a controlled environment vs. another team

— Brady Henderson (@BradyHenderson) April 1, 2025

The Seahawks have two home games to just one road game this preseason, which is the standard whenever a team has the extra regular season road game. It’s become commonplace for teams to hold a joint practice against the same team it’ll face in the same preseason week.

Whether joint scrimmages will be open to the public may be a different story. The second Titans-Seahawks practice was open to fans in Nashville, but not every team will have the same policy. It’d certainly be great if one of the public practices at VMAC could include a joint scrimmage.

We’ll find out the Seahawks’ full training camp schedule by the end of June.
