Leeds United dropped out of the automatic promotion places in the Championship on Saturday following a 1-1 draw away to relegation-threatened Luton Town.

The result means it is one win in six for Leeds, who must now rely on results elsewhere in their final six matches of the season if they are to earn automatic promotion.

Having replaced struggling goalkeeper Illan Meslier with Karl Darlow in the starting XI, Daniel Farke’s side fell behind to their lowly hosts in the first half with Isaiah Jones netting a back-post volley after good work from Elijah Adebayo and Jordan Clark.

Leeds were level within 13 minutes of the opening goal after Dan James curled in a left-footed finish after a corner had been cleared as far as him.

With pressure growing, owing in part to scores elsewhere, Leeds failed to take the initiative as the game wore on and stand-in goalkeeper Darlow was required to make a couple of saves to keep them level.

But neither side were able to make a telling contribution, with both taking a point. For Luton, the gap to safety is cut to two points ahead of Saturday’s later kick-offs.

Taking Leeds’ place in the top two was Burnley, who came from behind to win 2-1 away to Coventry City and go top.

The Clarets went behind after just five minutes at the Coventry Building Society Arena after Haji Wright scored his fourth goal in his last three appearances.

The United States international survived appeals for offside for what was just the seventh away goal Burnley have conceded all season.

But Scott Parker’s side responded brilliantly and were level through Jaidon Anthony just 11 minutes later after a well-worked goal.

Just a minute into the second half, Anthony bagged both his and Burnley’s second of the game to put them ahead after a defensive mix-up between Liam Kitching and goalkeeper Brad Collins.

The home side threw everything at Burnley as the second half wore on, but were unable to break their resistance. Tensions appeared to get the better of Coventry head coach Frank Lampard, who was sent off after the final whistle for something he said to the referee.

Defeat sees the Sky Blues stay sixth, although they are just one point above Bristol City, who have a game in hand.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Sunderland further cemented their place in the play-off positions with a 1-0 victory away to West Bromwich Albion.

Trai Hume scored the only goal of the game on 35 minutes, with his whipped free kick missing everyone in the box and going straight into the back of the net.

Despite the Baggies dominating possession and controlling the game, they were unable to avoid a damaging defeat and now trail the top six by two points with six games remaining.
