Carlos Alcaraz’s 2025 season didn’t start as brilliantly as most fans expected, despite his top rival Jannik Sinner receiving a three-month ban from the professional tour after reaching a deal with WADA.

His results have been spotty in the first three months of the new season, considering that he has won just one title in Rotterdam and suffered some quite shocking defeats for a player of his caliber. The former world No. 1 had hoped to achieve much better results especially in the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells and Miami, where he had the chance to overtake Alexander Zverev in second place in the ATP rankings.

However, the 21-year-old from Murcia did not go beyond the semifinals in California and was even eliminated in the second round in Florida, leaving the tournament with very bad feelings. The 4-time Grand Slam champion spent a few days relaxing with his family and then resumed practicing ahead of the Monte Carlo Masters 1000, in which he will not be able to afford another disappointment.

Alcaraz will have to defend many points

It is still too early to talk about a crisis of Carlitos, but it is clear to everyone that the current world number 3 needs to change some technical and mental aspects to avoid disappointment at Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the coming months.

Speaking on the latest edition of the podcast he hosts together with former WTA star Andrea Petkovic, German legend Boris Becker highlighted how Alcaraz has made some wrong choices lately: “I was afraid that the Spaniard would simply play too many tournaments and that he would also play exhibitions during the winter break.

Then the exhibition in Las Vegas ahead of Indian Wells.

This is all nice for the wallet, but for the annual planning, the tournament planning, it is bad.

Unfortunately, I was right.”

The former world No.1 will have to defend his title in Paris and London in the coming months, further pressure that will require the best version of Alcaraz.
