Exclusive: Geordan Murphy to join England’s coaching staff for summer tour

Telegraph Sport understands that Geordan Murphy will become a member of Steve Borthwick's backroom team for their summer tour of Argentina and the United States.

The news comes as it was revealed that England attack coach, Richard Wigglesworth will be joining Andy Farrell's British and Irish Lions team, leaving a question of who will manage England's attack following their encouraging end to this year's Six Nations. That question appears to have been answered as it was revealed on Monday that Murphy will be taking over the reins, albeit on a temporary basis.

The news comes as some surprise after Borthwick's and Murphy's apparently rocky relationship during their time together at Leicester Tigers, with the former eventually terminating the latter's contract before going on to win The Premiership title with the midlands club. Murphy has also been highly critical of the England coach in recent times, further raising eyebrows around the appointment.

"Geordan and I have always had a fantastic working relationship. [He is] a top, top coach and I'm sure the players will respond brilliantly to his coaching style." enthused Borthwick when questioned at England's Pennyhill Park training base.

England begin their summer tour against Argentina in La Plata on July the 5th.
