Jadon Sancho could remain a Chelsea player after all, despite the revelation there’s an opt-out clause in the deal agreed with Manchester United.
When the Blues signed the winger on loan last summer they reportedly did not pay a loan fee, but did agree to an obligation to buy the player at the end of the season for £25 million.
It emerged this week that Chelsea could back out of the deal, but it would mean Man United are owed a £5m penalty payment.
That appeared like a real possibility after Sancho‘s form dipped following a decent start to life at Stamford Bridge. He produced three assists in his opening three appearances for the club, but has not had a goal involvement since 4 January.

However, Sky Sports claim that Chelsea are ‘still expected’ sign Sancho permanently in the summer when the transfer window opens.
The west London outfit are also ‘expected’ to be in the market for a new winger due to the uncertainty surrounding Mykhailo Mudryk’s future. The Ukraine international was handed a provisional suspension by the FA in December after testing positive for a banned substance.
Sancho was signed by Man United from Borussia Dortmund for £73m in 2021. But the 25-year-old left Old Trafford after falling out with former manager Erik ten Hag.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca said in January that he thought Sancho was “doing very well” at the club. “I am quite surprised with Jadon, because I knew Jadon already [from seeing him at his previous clubs] and I know what I expected from him, but in terms of being consistent, he’s doing very well,” he said.
