The family of legendary boxer George Foreman confirmed late Friday night that the former two-time heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist has passed away at 76.

Foreman died in a Houston hospital but the cause of death remains undisclosed.

Foreman had a Hall of Fame boxing career that spanned 30 years from 1967 to 1997. He retired from competition at age 48 after becoming the oldest world heavyweight titleholder at age 46.

He won his first amateur boxing match in 1967 by knockout. He went on to win a gold medal in the heavyweight division at the 1968 Summer Olympic Games. He captured the world heavyweight boxing title in 1973 by knocking out the then-undefeated Joe Frazier. Perhaps most famous for his 1974 ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ fight against Muhammad Ali where Ali coined the “rope-a-dope” strategy to emerge victorious.

Foreman fought 81 times amassing a record of 76-5 with 68 wins by knockout.

“Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr. who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose,” The family statement read.

“A humanitarian, an Olympian, and two time heavyweight champion of the world, He was deeply respected — a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name— for his family,” the statement continued.

“We are grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers, and kindly ask for privacy as we honor the extraordinary life of a man we were blessed to call our own.”

Upon hearing the news of Foreman’s passing, UFC CEO Dana White reacted with a short statement. “RIP Big George,” White wrote on social media.

Foreman is the oldest fighter to hold the world heavyweight championship and Mike Tyson became the youngest fighter to stake claim to the title. Tyson reacted to Foreman’s passing by recognizing Foreman’s contributions to boxing.

“Condolences to George Foreman’s family. His contribution to boxing and beyond will never be forgotten,” Tyson wrote on X.
