Arsenal in ‘concrete talks’ over £90m signing: report

The first FIFA international break of 2025 has brought a pause to club football, but the transfer rumor mill continues to churn. While South American teams are engaged in World Cup qualifying matches, speculation has intensified regarding potential moves for two Argentina World Cup winners, with Real Madrid reportedly showing strong interest in both. The international break has allowed for increased focus on the upcoming transfer window.

According to British media outlet Team Talk, Real Madrid is interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian “Cuti” Romero. The 26-year-old Argentine center-back is a key player for Tottenham, but his contract has two years remaining, and the club wishes to extend his contract.

However, Romero hasn’t yet committed to a new deal, leading to speculation about his future and a potential transfer. Real Madrid has reportedly tracked Romero since his strong performances at the Qatar 2022 World Cup. This renewed interest could be linked to the club’s need to add depth in their defensive ranks.

Romero’s situation at Tottenham and potential transfer fee

Despite being a highly-valued player at Tottenham, Romero has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, limiting his appearances. Tottenham’s current league position (13th in the Premier League) and the prospect of a move to a club the size of Real Madrid could make a transfer appealing to Romero.

Team Talk suggests that Tottenham may sell Romero if he doesn’t sign a new contract, with a potential transfer fee around €71 million. This move could be beneficial for the club in terms of freeing up funds for additional acquisitions.

Another player on Real Madrid’s radar is Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández. Fernández joined Chelsea in 2023 for a record-breaking fee of £107 million, but Real Madrid believes he could strengthen their midfield.

However, Chelsea is reportedly reluctant to sell unless a significant offer is received, potentially exceeding the original transfer fee paid to Benfica. Fernández’s contract with Chelsea extends to 2032, presenting a significant hurdle to any potential transfer. His current role and captain status at Chelsea further complicates the situation.

Real Madrid is reportedly unwilling to pay more than Chelsea originally paid for Fernández but suggests a potential player exchange involving Aurélien Tchouaméni. Tchouaméni is a key player for Real Madrid, making this a significant consideration for the club’s management.

The interest in Romero and Fernández reflects Real Madrid’s ambitious transfer strategy. Having recently signed Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé, Real Madrid’s quest to remain a top European club continues, with the pursuit of these two Argentinian stars further evidence of their ambition. The pursuit of these players signals Real Madrid’s commitment to maintaining its competitive edge in the global football landscape.
