The Los Angeles Dodgers opened their title defense Tuesday in Japan, but got some bad news minutes before first pitch.

All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman was scratched from the lineup and replaced by Kiké Hernández at first base with Michael Conforto moving to left field.

The Dodgers said it was due to left rib discomfort.

This is a very ominous injury for Freeman, the reigning World Series Most Valuable Player.

Freeman injured his rib just months ago during his heroic postseason run where he also dealt with a severe ankle sprain.

It’s unclear if Freeman has been dealing with some discomfort all spring or if he randomly re-aggravated his rib ahead of the season opener.

Freeman was taking batting practice on the field before the game.

The Dodgers were already without one of their superstars, as shortstop Mookie Betts was ruled out for the Tokyo Series as he recovers from an illness.

Now, L.A. will be without two-thirds of their superstar trio atop the lineup to kick off the 2025 campaign.

Manager Dave Roberts will provide a further update on Freeman after the game.
