Is Pochettino leaving USMNT? Awkward question about his possible move and links to the Premier League

Despite his relatively short tenure as head coach of the United States men’s national team (USMNT), Mauricio Pochettino continues to be linked with a return to the Premier League. Manchester United, in particular, has been frequently mentioned as a potential destination for Pochettino in recent years.

When recently questioned by talkSPORT presenter Andy Goldstein about his proximity to the Manchester United job, Pochettino responded evasively, offering a humorous yet noncommittal answer, stating, “Okay. Thanks! I’ll send you my address.” Pochettino’s playful response avoided a direct answer to the question of whether or not he was ever close to taking the United job.

While remaining tight-lipped about Manchester United, Pochettino was more forthcoming about his former club, Tottenham Hotspur. He guided Tottenham to their only Champions League final appearance to date in 2019 and secured multiple top-three Premier League finishes.

Pochettino openly admitted a desire to return, stating: “To be honest, the day I left the club, I always thought about coming back.” He described leaving Tottenham as a feeling of incompleteness, a sentiment that fuelled his desire to return and achieve what he sees as unfinished business with the club.

Speculation surrounding potential Tottenham return

Given Tottenham‘s recent struggles under Ange Postecoglou, a managerial vacancy could potentially emerge, presenting Pochettino with a possible opportunity. However, even if such an opportunity arises, the allure of leading the USMNT at a home World Cup next summer might prove too difficult to resist.

Pochettino’s comments about Tottenham reveal a deep affection for the club and a desire to achieve greater things there. The comments suggest that he sees the club as a place he could achieve further success.

For now, Pochettino’s focus remains firmly on the USMNT. His first opportunity to win a trophy with the team will come at the end of March when they compete in the CONCACAF Nations League finals in California. The USMNT will face Panama in the semifinals, with a potential final against either Mexico or Canada.
