2025 NFL Free Agency: Miami Dolphins sign veteran CB Artie Burns

The Miami Dolphins have added some veteran depth to the secondary, signing former first-round pick and Miami Hurricanes standout Artie Burns to a one-year deal. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the signing.

Former Seahawks free-agent CB Artie Burns reached agreement today on a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins. Burns is a former first-round pick from the University of Miami, where he was born and raised. Now, a homecoming.

Burns, 29, was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 25th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. During his four years with Pittsburgh, Burns started 39 out of 90 games, recording 149 total tackles, 27 pass breakups, and nine interceptions. He would then play for one year with the Chicago Bears (2021) before landing with the Seattle Seahawks as a free agent in 2022. He finished his Seattle career starting only one game in three seasons.

Before being drafted by the Steelers, Burns played three seasons at the University of Miami (2013-2015), where he recorded 93 tackles, seven interceptions, and 14 pass breakups. His impressive 2015 season was enough to get him drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft. Unfortunately, injuries and other factors impacted Burns’ progress, as he never quite met his lofty expectations.

Last year, Burns suffered a toe injury that forced him to miss a majority of the season. Nevertheless, this feels like nothing more than added depth to a secondary that lost Kendall Fuller this offseason. A warm body to compete alongside the Ethan Bonners and Isaiah Johnsons of the world. He also brings value to special teams, but overall, I don’t think this signing really moves the needle — though I’d love nothing more than to be wrong!

That’s not to say Burns can’t rejuvenate his career in his hometown of Miami, but it seems very unlikely for an aging player who has started just eight games since the 2019 NFL season. Then again, stranger things have happened.

Welcome (back) to Miami, Artie Burns.

What are your thoughts on the Miami Dolphins signing veteran cornerback Artie Burns? How do you think he fits into Anthony Weaver’s secondary? Do you think this changes Miami’s plans in the draft (Dumb question, I know)? Let us know in the comments section below!
