After a lengthy delay, Kameda Promotions held a press conference this morning to announce that IBF featherweight champion Angelo Leo is finally set to defend his title against mandatory challenger Tomoki Kameda on May 24th in Osaka, Japan.
Leo (24-1, 11 KO) hasn’t seen action since crushing Luis Alberto Lopez with one of 2024’s nastiest knockouts last August. Two weeks later, Kameda (42-4, 23 KO) battled his way past Lerato Dlamini to avenge an October ‘23 upset loss, “El Mexicanito’s” only defeat since an unsuccessful 2019 title big against Rey Vargas.
Kameda had previously enjoyed a solid reign as WBO bantamweight champion and a one-fight stint as a secondary super bantamweight titlist.
As I’ve said before, there’s a very good chance this one produces fireworks. Though neither is seen as a puncher, both excel at infighting and body punching in particular. All signs point to twelve rounds of nose-to-nose action; hopefully there’ll be an easy way for us to watch.
