FC Barcelona is exploring alternative options to bolster their attack, with Liverpool’s Luis Díaz emerging as a prominent target, as Sport informed. Sporting director Deco acknowledges the significant challenge in securing Alexander Isak from Newcastle, and the club is currently uncertain about their financial fair play limitations next summer. However, Deco is charting a course to make a move for the Colombian winger feasible.

At 28, Díaz perfectly fits Barcelona’s profile for a new attacking player. He’s in his prime, possesses exceptional dribbling skills, and offers versatility.

While Isak is the ideal candidate in a financially unrestricted scenario, his contract runs until 2028, and Newcastle has signaled a minimum valuation exceeding €120 million. This price would increase significantly if Newcastle qualifies for the Champions League.

The situation surrounding Díaz presents a more favorable opportunity. The Colombian player is reportedly very interested in a move to Barcelona. In his fourth season with Liverpool, Díaz is open to joining the Catalan club, having expressed a long-standing desire to play for Barcelona since his youth career at Junior. His father previously revealed this ambition, and Díaz himself voiced his desire while playing in Colombia.

Initial contact and financial constraints

Deco has already made informal contact with Díaz’s representatives, who are aware of Barcelona’s interest. However, Barcelona’s financial situation, limited by financial fair play regulations, necessitates a significant sale to free up sufficient funds for this transfer. The club is expected to undertake at least one major sale next summer to make the move viable.

Díaz’s contract extends only until 2027, providing a significant advantage over Isak. Díaz is nearing the end of his amortization period, meaning his transfer fee would likely be lower if he isn’t sold next summer. Liverpool’s leverage would diminish further in 2026, as it would be their last opportunity to maximize their return. However, if Díaz perceives a lack of concrete action from Barcelona, he might opt to renew his contract with Liverpool.

Barcelona is proactively planning how to generate the necessary funds to acquire Díaz, whose transfer fee is estimated to be in the €70-75 million range. This would require generating at least €30 million in salary space for next season, covering the player’s wages and amortization costs. The club is carefully assessing all financial aspects to ensure a successful transfer.
