Liverpool open to selling Nunez for £68m; suitors queuing up

Alexander Isak says he can achieve his career goals at Newcastle but was vague when asked to discuss his future plans.

The Sweden international has developed into one of the Premier League’s leading strikers since moving to Tyneside from Real Sociedad in 2022, scoring 50 goals in just 77 top-flight appearances.

That record has led to speculation linking him with Arsenal and Liverpool, who Newcastle meet in Sunday’s EFL Cup final.

The 25-year-old has a contract until 2028 at St James’ Park and asked about his long-term ambitions today, he said: “That is why I came here. I have said many times that I don’t really think too much about my future.

“I have said many times I am happy here and we are competing for titles which is what you want as a football player. We have been to one final and now we are in another one.

“The chances are there. We should look at it one season at a time, and this season we can win a trophy. I have said many times I am focused on doing a job. All of our focus is on Sunday and bringing a trophy back.”

Alex Isak ahead of the Carabao Cup final:

“I feel good. I am really excited for the game. The best way to prepare is to train as normal. It will come down to what we do as a team, and that is all we can focus on. I am excited but focused on the job.”

I have high ambitions – Isak

He added: “I just want to be the best version of myself. I have high ambitions. I am trying to create my own history at Newcastle. Happy with what I have done so far but always looking forward.

“It’s hard work and training and the mentality to want to get better. I have ambitions to achieve in my career and be the best version of myself.”

Isak fully fit to face Liverpool

Isak missed the recent league fixture against Liverpool – a match Newcastle lost 2-0 at Anfield – but has played the last two games, an FA Cup defeat to Brighton and Monday’s 1-0 Premier League win at West Ham.

And he insists he is fully fit for the trip to Wembley.

“I have not been injured, I have just had a bit of tiredness. It [the media coverage] has been dramatic,” he said.

“I feel good. I am really excited for the game. The best way to prepare is to train as normal. It will come down to what we do as a team, and that is all we can focus on. I am excited but focused on the job.”
