INVERNESS HALF MARATHON (inc. Scottish championships), Inverness, March 9
Jamie Crowe claimed his first Scottish half marathon title after storming to an impressive victory in one of the most competitive races in the 40-year history of the event, Denis Shepherd reports.
The outcome was in doubt throughout as a large group of runners forced the pace in the Highland capital, but with less than one kilometre remaining, Crowe unleashed a devastating surge which gave him the breathing space he craved, although he wasn’t able to relax until the finish line was reached in 65:19 with the fast-finishing Sean Chalmers and Ryan Thomson chasing him every step of the way.
Edinburgh AC athlete Nancy Scott was in commanding form as she followed up her Scottish cross-country silver medal with gold in the women’s race, this assured performance coming after a busy spell of racing over the past month. The 25-year-old stopped the clock at 73:24 to finish ahead of GB and NI mountain running international Naomi Lang and surprise package Brogan Wallace, both of whom were setting lifetime bests.

PADDOCK WOOD HALF-MARATHON, Inc BRITISH MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIP, Kent, March 9
Cole Gibbens, who won overall with a 65:00, together with open runner-up Max Milarvie were comfortably ahead of the rest of the runners on a sunny but breezy day but much focus was on the veterans taking part in the British Masters Championship.
It was a two-minute personal best for South of the Thames winner Gibbens while Milarvie was also in new territory with his 65:19.
Chris Buseileh, with 70:13 and age group best ever Nick Torry, topped the M40 and M45 categories whilst long-time Kent running servant Ben Reynolds topped the M60 lists here with 81:18.
Not far down, top M65 Ifan Lloyd headed third all-time ranked Norman Mawhinney to take the age group title comfortably with 81:56.
The leading woman in the open race was Herne Hill’s Lucy Jones, whose debut over the distance in 72:28 gave a four-minute margin over second placed Rebecca Weston but the better competition was further up the women’s age groups.

Sarah Gee (Mark Hookway)
It was the older women who provided the most competitive action and W60 winner Sarah Gee headed all of the over-50 women. The former London Marathon double W45 age group winner went second on the over-60 all-time lists with an 85:05 clocking after being on schedule to better Treena Johnson’s 84:26 at the half-way point. This moves the Reading Road Runner up a notch and ahead of former world marathon runner Angharad Mair.
Gee, who took 14 years off of racing before coming back last autumn, said: “I was on target to beat the record of 84:28 and went through half-way in 42:11 but don’t have the training in me yet to maintain that pace for 13-miles.”
There was also a top class run from top W70 Sue Haslam as the Scarborough runner comfortably beat the top ranked former Olympian Yuko Gordon who went second on the over-70 all-time lists with 98:12, as fifth ranked Dot Kesterton exactly matched her best W70 effort of 1:46:37.
