FC Barcelona are currently one of the most exciting teams in world soccer following an impressive first season under Hansi Flick, competing on multiple fronts. With several standout performers in the squad, the German coach recently suggested a potential Ballon d’Or contender — and it’s not Lamine Yamal or Robert Lewandowski.
While both Lewandowski and Yamal have been pivotal for Barcelona this season — the former netting 34 goals and the latter providing 16 assists — Flick singled out Raphinha as a surprising yet deserving candidate for the prestigious award. When asked about Raphinha’s chances of being a contender for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, Flick didn’t hesitate to express his admiration:
“Yes, of course. He performed well this season and it’s really good to see that. So far from what we’ve seen, he always helps us with his dynamic, but also when you see the goals he scored before, the 5-4, the 1-0, it shows everything about him,” Flick said in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Benfica clash.
Beyond praising his technical abilities, Flick also highlighted the Brazilian’s strong mentality and how he thrives under pressure: “He has this hunger, and you can see it when he attacks, with the mentality to solve the situation with a goal. He’s a player that’s really focused on that, and I’m happy that he’s here at this level.”
Raphinha has emerged as one of the driving forces behind Barcelona’s impressive season, combining goal-scoring prowess with creative playmaking and decisive dribbling. The Brazilian winger has registered 25 goals and 18 assists in 40 appearances this season. With Barcelona still competing in La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League, Raphinha will have plenty of opportunities to further strengthen his Ballon d’Or case.

Raphinha, the ace against Benfica
Barcelona will face Benfica on Tuesday in the Champions League round of 16 second leg, holding a narrow 1-0 advantage from the first match. In the press conference, Flick has openly backed Raphinha to be the game-changer once again.
Earlier in the group stage, Barcelona edged Benfica in a thrilling 5-4 victory in Portugal, where Raphinha played a starring role with two goals, including the match-winner. He was also the hero in the first leg of the knockout stage, scoring the decisive goal in Barcelona’s slim 1-0 win.
With a track record of three goals in two games against Benfica, Raphinha has proven his value in crucial moments. As Barcelona look to protect their lead and advance to the quarterfinals, Flick will be counting on the Brazilian to deliver once again.
