Some players are ‘not good enough’ says Ratcliffe

Chelsea want £100 million to sell Nicolas Jackson

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe says some players at the club “are not good enough” and “overpaid” as he revealed the club will be paying for players he has inherited this summer.

Ratcliffe spent over £1bn to buy into the club and is in charge of football operations at Old Trafford.

He has overseen a campaign which has included the sacking of Erik ten Hag and hiring of Ruben Amorim – but United have had an awful season.

Amorim’s side are 14th in the Premier League.

Ratcliffe told the BBC: “If you look at the players we are buying this summer, that we didn’t buy, we’re buying Antony, we’re buying Casemiro, we’re buying Andre Onana, we’re buying Rasmus Hojlund, we’re buying Jadon Sancho. These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we’ve inherited those things and have to sort that out.

“For Sancho, who now plays for Chelsea and we pay half his wages, we’re paying £17m to buy him in the summer.

“Some are not good enough and some probably are overpaid, but for us to mould the squad that we are fully responsible for, and accountable for, will take time.

“We’ve got this period of transformation where we move from the past to the future.

“There are some great players in the squad as we know, the captain is a fabulous footballer. We definitely need Bruno Fernandes, he’s a fantastic footballer.”

Sancho scored 12 goals for United but fell out of favour under Ten Hag, spending the second half of last season back on loan at former club Borussia Dortmund before joining Chelsea last summer.
