2025 NBA Playoffs Scenario and Seeding: Which Teams Have Yet To Clinch a Postseason Spot?

The NBA playoffs are rapidly approaching, and the playoff picture is intensifying. The teams that will participate in this year’s playoffs are not yet fully determined, as the play-in tournament adds an element of uncertainty. The Western Conference is a tight battle, while the Eastern Conference mostly appears to have its teams locked into their playoff positions.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have secured the top seed in the East and home-court advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs, while the Boston Celtics have firmly established themselves as the second seed. Although one game separates the New York Knicks and Indiana Pacers for the third and fourth seeds, it is widely anticipated that these two teams will remain in their respective spots.

In the Western Conference, the top two seeds are also locked. The Oklahoma City Thunder finished with the league’s best record and the No. 1 seed. The surprise of the year is the Houston Rockets securing the second seed after winning over 50 games. The remainder of the West is tightly contested.

Western Conference Teams Left To Clinch Their Spot

While the final four teams in the play-in scenarios for each conference are now clear, the Western Conference is highly competitive from the third seed down to the eighth seed. With the Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, Golden State Warriors, Memphis Grizzlies, and Minnesota Timberwolves all vying for those slots, the final standings could shift.

This situation seems to highlight a scenario where the play-in tournament might feel unnecessary. Many would argue that the top eight teams should automatically qualify for the playoffs, especially considering the significant gap in wins between the eighth and ninth seeds. Nevertheless, the playoff picture suggests that at least one deserving team might potentially miss out.

With two games remaining in the regular season, it’s difficult to definitively say which teams have the advantage. The Lakers appear poised to secure the third seed, while the Nuggets seem likely to claim the fourth. However, beyond that, the final seedings are uncertain.

The Potential Playoff Scenarios and Matchups

If the Lakers finish third, they could be on a path to a highly anticipated matchup against the Golden State Warriors if the Warriors maintain the sixth seed. This would be a compelling first-round series. The Nuggets and Clippers could potentially face each other in the playoffs, although there’s a slight chance both could drop in the standings if they lose one of their remaining games.

The Eastern Conference also has intriguing potential matchups. The Knicks are currently on track for a first-round series against the Detroit Pistons, while the Pacers are positioned to host the Milwaukee Bucks. The Eastern Conference play-in tournament will feature the Orlando Magic against the Atlanta Hawks and the Miami Heat versus the Chicago Bulls.

The Western Conference play-in matchups are still too early to definitively predict, but as it stands, the Grizzlies and Timberwolves are slated to face each other. The ninth and 10th seeds, the Dallas Mavericks and Sacramento Kings, respectively, will compete for a chance to play the loser of the Grizzlies-Timberwolves game for the eighth seed.

With the playoffs just around the corner, these final few days of NBA basketball carry significant implications.
