There will be no forgetting Thursday, March 2, 2025, for Monterrey supporters. The illustrious Spanish defender Sergio Ramos made an instant impression in Mexico that night when he scored his first goal for his new career chapter. In an exciting match on Matchday 10 of the 2025 Clausura Tournament, Rayados defeated Santos Laguna 4-2.

The former Real Madrid and Spanish national team icon needed just two home matches to find the net, reinforcing his reputation as a clutch performer. What made the moment even more special was the manner in which he celebrated—recreating his signature Los Blancos goal celebration, evoking memories of his glorious past at the Santiago Bernabeu, particularly the 2014 UEFA Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.

It took only two matches for the veteran to prove why he remains one of the most commanding defenders in world soccer. At 38 years old, and despite taking a brief hiatus from competitive soccer before arriving in Liga MX, Ramos demonstrated his enduring quality in front of a packed Estadio BBVA.

With the captain’s armband wrapped around his arm, Ramos led the team from the back, providing motivation, aerial dominance, and defensive solidity. His presence was pivotal as Monterrey twice had to come from behind before eventually securing all three points.

Vintage Sergio Ramos goal reminiscent of final against Atletico Madrid

The moment of magic arrived in the 57th minute. With the score tied at 1-1, Sergio Canales, another former Real Madrid and Spain maestro in the Rayados squad, delivered a pinpoint cross from the right flank. Ramos, sporting the number ’93’ jersey, timed his run to perfection and soared above the Santos Laguna defenders, meeting the ball with a towering header that left goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo with no chance. The crowd erupted in celebration as Ramos wheeled away, arms outstretched, reliving the iconic moments of his La Liga career.

His teammates immediately swarmed him, recognizing the significance of the goal. The stadium, filled with passionate White-and-Blues supporters, chanted his name in unison, welcoming their new defensive leader with open arms. It was a reminder of the Ramos who thrived in European nights, delivering decisive headers in crucial moments for Real Madrid.

Impact beyond defense

Ramos’ influence on Monterrey extends far beyond his defensive contributions. In just two matches, he has shown why he remains one of the greatest leaders in soccer. His goal was not just a statistic—it was a statement.

The four-time Champions League winner and World Cup champion has arrived in Liga MX, not as a player content with winding down his career, but as a competitor determined to leave his mark on Mexican soccer.
